7 Bands That Kick Ass

With political tensions rising over Brexit, Trump, and Kim Jong Un, distractions sound pretty good right now, but in the form of kick-ass music, they sound pretty damn awesome. Music influences our moods just as the weather does – when we need to smile and dance, we all know a song that will get us there. Below is a selection of bands that will easily distract you from whatever you are worrying about (at least temporarily) and put a hop in your step.

1. The Internet

LA-based band, The Internet offers smooth lyrics and vibes that pull you into the moment. Syd, the main vocalist, has an amazing voice, with a soft edge that couples well with the lyrics.

I’m in like, she’s in love
She gave in, I gave up
Can we just live in the moment?

– Girl, The Internet

2. Anderson .Paak

Another Californian, Anderson .Paak is a rapper, singer, songwriter, and drummer. He is amazingly skilled (as seen in the NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert link). His smile, his rhythm, his songs are fantastic. They’ll certainly have you smiling and wondering what you were so worried about before.

But you leave it all in the back of your head
All in the palm of my hand
Ain’t nobody holding you back
Don’t it feel like it’s been far too long, girl?

– Heart Don’t Stand A Chance, Anderson .Paak

3. Tank and the Bangas

I’ve written about Tank and the Bangas before, but I couldn’t resist adding them in this list. They are an amazing group, producing music that is smart and rhythmic. Hailing from New Orleans, their influences range from soul, poetry, hip hop, and much more.

Maybe we can go to the store
And buy your ass a clue
I heard they’ve got some honesty on sale (maybe we can buy him two)

– Boxes and Squares, Tank and the Bangas

4. Hayley Kiyoko

Pop songs are American Hayley Kiyoko’s specialty. With lyrics that kick-ass and rhythms that lift your mood instantly, Kiyoko is a gem in an overly pop-saturated industry. Her videos are fun and often tackle themes such as sexuality, for instance “Girls Like Girls” and “Gravel To Tempo”.

We’ve gone down every list
Stuck but I have got to begin to resist
Caught up with the fact that life will be dark
But can we handle being kids?

– Gravel to Tempo, Hayley Kiyoko

5. Childish Gambino

Wildly talented, Donald Glover’s alter ego, Childish Gambino, is a mix of hip-hop, rap and funk. His voice is astounding, with lyrics that strike close to trending topics. His latest album, “Awaken My Love!”, is a mindfield of brilliant songs that are difficult to choose a favourite from.

So insecure, no one’s perfect
We spend it, with no shame
We blow that, like Coltrane
We in here, like Rogain
Or leave it, like Cobain

– 3005, Childish Gambino

6. Arcade Fire

Hailing from Canada, Arcade Fire mix psychedelic rock with indie pop. They are definitely a band to disappear with, their songs easily drawing you out of your worries and into their world, with trance-like lyrics and soft voices.

If this is heaven
I need something more
Just a place to be alone
‘Cause you’re my home

– Reflektor, Arcade Fire

7. Honne

English duo, Honne, has plenty of laid-back vibes. Soft voices coupled with low-key electronic rhythms make this band perfect for those times when you need some “me” time.

I know it’s in there somewhere
Your love for me is out there
I can hear it calling
Where’s your sense of belonging?
We could be getting frisky girl
Till three o’clock in the morning

– 3am, Honne
